County Limerick

County Limerick (Contae Luimnigh) (pop. 186,000) is a beautiful and historically fascinating county that takes its name from a historically interesting but unlovely city. The scenic countryside south of the River Shannon estuary features green hills, valleys (including the famous Glen of Aherlow), streams, lakes (notably Lough Gur),  archaeological sites, ancient monasteries, medieval strongholds (e.g. Castle Matrix), aristocratic Big Houses and attractive villages and towns (such as Kilmallock and pretty Adare).
